What Are Carpet Tiles?

Standard carpeting has many advantages, but it’s not always what works best in every situation. For many consumers, carpet tiles are actually a much better fit. So just what are carpet tiles?

Carpet Meets Tile

Unlike carpeting which comes in rolls, carpet tiles are basically a soft carpet surface in a tile format. Because they are square in shape they are also called carpet squares. Each individual tile has a backing that helps to protect the carpeting against moisture and keep its square shape.

Backings are manufactured from a few different materials such as vinyl, recycled vinyl, fiberglass, vinyl and fiberglass, urethane, and woven polypropylene. Tiles also come in a wide range of colors, patterns, designs, and textures. They can vary in size, fiber material, and pile size. There are different types for different uses such as indoor outdoor, residential, and commercial carpet tiles.

Backing Options

Tiles have either an adhesive or non-adhesive backing. Both types are designed for easy installation. Adhesive backings are usually peel and stick, while with non-adhesive backings you’ll need to use adhesive tape or glue. Interlocking carpet tiles are also an option too.

Benefits Of Carpet Tiles

One of the most popular features of carpet tiles is that you can install them on your own, which saves cash. They can actually be installed right over other types of flooring as well.  This along with the fact that they can easily be removed even when adhesive is used makes them an ideal choice for renters. Quality tiles are both durable and stain-resistant.

And individual tiles can be taken out when a deeper cleaning is necessary or when there’s a need to replace a specific tile. Because they are interchangeable you also have the chance to get creative with the many different options available for a truly customized look. You can create borders, patterns, mix and match, and more. And when you’d like a fresh look you can always re-arrange them.

Drawbacks Of Carpet Tiles

While they do offer a lot of benefits, there are a few drawbacks to this flooring option as well. One of the disadvantages of carpet tiles is that the seams of the tiles are often visible, which can highlight their square shape. Just like other types of carpeting, tiles can absorb allergens, so they may not be the best choice for those who suffer from serious allergies. And with the exception of indoor-outdoor carpet tiles which have better drainage, tiles are not made for wet or moist areas.

As you’ve just discovered, carpet tiles are a very convenient flooring option. They aren’t for everyone but when you want a carpeted surface that’s easy to install, maintain, and re-arrange they’re a no-brainer!
